IMPORTANT:
There
have recently been an increasing number of attempts
on the Internet to trick people into revealing
sensitive and private information about themselves
to con artists who use that information to defraud
them. The latest scam, popularly called 'phishing',
uses replicas of existing web pages to deceive
users. These replicated pages prompt the user to
enter personal, financial or password data.
Phishing is a term coined by Internet hackers who use email lures to 'fish'
passwords and financial data from the sea of Internet users. Email messages
designed to look like they came from a merchant or financial institution
are mailed to Internet users. The emails then direct the recipient to update
or provide information back to the company's web site by instructing the
user to click on a URL embedded within the email.
The embedded URL links the user to a counterfeit web site designed to look
like the company's legitimate web site. Passwords and other personal information
are then solicited and collected by the web site and used by the scammer
to defraud the user.
How Can You Protect Yourself?

Do
not trust or act upon unsolicited emails that request personal
information such as passwords, credit card numbers, ATM
PINs, social security numbers, etc.

Fraudulent
emails are typically not personalized with financial institution
information.

Fraudulent
email will often present you with scenarios of negative
consequences if you do not act immediately on the email's
instructions.

Fraudulent
email messages often contain flawed English.
-
Do
not fill out forms contained in email messages requesting
sensitive information.

Personal
information should be provided by calling your financial
institution directly or by logging onto their secure web
site by typing the URL (web address) into your browser.

Type
APLFCU's website address into your browser and bookmark
it. Use the bookmark derived from hand-typing the address
for all subsequent visits.

Regularly
log in to your online accounts. If you see anything unusual,
report it immediately to your financial institution.

Pay
close attention to your account, credit card and debit
card statements. If you see anything suspicious, immediately
contact APLFCU and the card issuer.

Credit Union will never ask for account verification via
e-mail. If you receive an e-mail claiming to be from APL
Federal Credit Union,
but which you suspect is aimed at defrauding you, contact
APLFCU at support@aplfcu.org and
the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)* at www.ic3.gov.
* IC3 is a
partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C).
Members
who prefer to maintain their financial records through
a Personal Financial Manager (PFM) software package
using .QIF download files from Online Banking, versus
maintaining them on the Web, should consider their
options before upgrading the software.
While Quicken 2005 is now available, this new version does not allow
for .QIF downloads like earlier versions, such as Quicken 2004. Microsoft
Money allows for the same .QIF downloads, and is a dependable alternative
to new versions that allow only for web connections to your financial
records.
Both Quicken Version 2004 (or earlier) and Microsoft Money will continue
to be compatible with APLFCU's Home Banking export feature. Approximately
90 percent of APLFCU members who use personal financial management
(PFM) software and download transaction data from our web site have
chosen MS Money.

from your savings or checking account, transfer
between accounts, or advance funds from your Line
of Credit.
Allpoint's surcharge-free ATMs are located across the country in local,
regional, and national retail merchants. They include merchants such
as Target, Giant Foods, Costco, ExxonMobil, Rite Aid, Sunoco and many
others. Take a look at the ATM
Locator to discover the Allpoint ATMs closest to where you live,
work, or shop.
ATM transactions are also free and unlimited at APLFCU proprietary
machines, and you can also use your card for unlimited free Point of
Sale (POS) transactions. PINs are issued with each ATM Card, and can
be changed by visiting any APLFCU branch location.
